The Department was established in the academic year 2008/2009 (1429/1430H) as part of the College of Computer Engineering and Sciences under King Saud University. In the following academic year, 2009/2010 (1430/1431H), the colleges and departments located in the southern region of Riyadh were reorganized under the newly formed Al Kharj University. The institution was later renamed Salman bin Abdulaziz University, and it currently operates as Prince Sattam bin Abdulaziz University (PSAU).
The department offers two accredited academic programs for both male and female students: the Computer Engineering program, accredited by ABET, and the Master of Engineering in Cybersecurity, accredited by the National Center for Academic Accreditation and Evaluation (NCAAA).
